Mescaline

Mescaline is the name for a naturally-occurring alkaloid compound which has hallucinogenic properties when ingested by humans. Commonly known as peyote, after one of the types of North American cacti in which it is found, the use of mescaline was outlawed under the sweeping reforms of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse and Prevention Act of 1970.

Effects and Duration

Effects of mescaline use are reportedly similar to those of other hallucinogens, such as LSD. These include intensification and distortion of colors, an apparent flattening of three-dimensional objects, kaleidoscopic experiences, and synesthesia, or the transformation of one sensory impression into another. Depending on the amount ingested, mescaline effects can last as long as 12 hours.

Legality

Production or sale of mescaline can carry a fine of $15,000 and result in up to five years in prison, with possession carrying a up to a year-long sentence and $5,000. However, certain exceptions exist for traditional Native American ceremonies that call for peyote, though these laws vary by state. For example, Texas is the only state in which the sale of peyote is actually legal - albeit only for a small number of Native American traders.
