Austin Gun Possession Lawyer
In Texas, we take our right to bear arms very seriously. Gun possession laws in Texas are very complex, but are largely designed to protect citizens’ Second Amendment rights. While Texas has fairly lenient gun laws when compared to the rest of the country, individuals in Texas are still required to adhere to federal firearm restrictions, and any violation of state or federal laws can result in serious charges that can have serious effects on an individual’s future if he or she is convicted.
If you have been charged with illegal gun possession, Austin gun possession lawyer Ian Inglis can help you fight to have the charges against you reduced in severity or eliminated altogether. Contact our offices at 512-472-1950 to learn more about how an experienced criminal defense attorney may be able to help you avoid harsh, undeserved punishments.
Texas Concealed Handgun Restrictions
While Texans aren’t required to have a permit to own a gun, they are required to have a concealed handgun license (CHL) if they want to carry their gun in public. Without a CHL, it is unlawful to carry a gun on your person while out and about, including in your car. However, even with a license to carry a concealed handgun, restrictions remain.
Carrying a concealed handgun is not allowed in many populous public places including:
- On the premises of a business that derives a majority of its sales from alcohol
- Amusement parks
- High schools, collegiate and interscholastic locations, or professional sporting events
- Correctional facilities
- Established places of religious worship
- Hospitals or nursing homes (unless given authorization from administration)
- Any meeting of a government entity
Otherwise, a CHL allows a person to carry their handgun almost wherever they please. It is important to note that the weapon must remain concealed to comply with CHL laws as well. Failure to comply with the rules of concealed carry can result in charges ranging from Class A misdemeanors to third degree felonies.
