Prostitution
Often referred to as the “oldest profession,” prostitution has been considered in a different light by nearly every culture on earth. The deceptively simple definition of this act - engaging in sexual activity in exchange for goods or services - belies a broad range of actions and treatments in the eyes of the law, ranging from being punishable by death to being completely legal.
In the U.S., prostitution was actually legal in most places up until the efforts of the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement in 1910 through 1915. While solicitations for sexual favors are commonly considered to be illegal and punishable by fines or jail time, exact laws concerning prostitution still vary even by county.
For example, in some areas of Nevada and Rhode Island, this profession is considered wholly or partially legal. However, with the rise of HIV cases in 1980’s, legislation was passed that requires prostitutes of a legal and illegal status to be tested for the disease. If the test comes back positive, another prostitution offense is actually considered a felony instead of the usual misdemeanor.
